A Nonverbal Guide: Learning Activities for Children Who Don't Speak
Most learning apps ask a child to do one thing before anything else: say the word, repeat after the voice, or type the answer. For a child who doesn't speak yet, that first ask can end the session before it starts. This guide covers what to look for, and what Bright Sparkle Academy actually asks of a child.
The first question to ask any app
Before features, price, or design, ask one thing: how does my child show what they know? If the only allowed answer is speech or typing, the app is measuring something other than what your child knows. Look for apps that accept a different kind of answer.
What Bright Sparkle Academy asks of a child: a tap
- Tap an answer — children choose from the options on screen
- Tap the dots — braille letters are built by tapping the dots that make them
- Flip a card — memory activities are answered by tapping two cards
- Nothing in the free website activities asks a child to speak, read aloud, or type
The voice goes to your child, not from them
Directions and questions are read aloud to the child, so a child who doesn't speak can still follow along and show what they know. Parents can turn the voice off, slow the speaking speed down or speed it up, and choose a different voice. Activities work in English and Spanish, and switching languages keeps your child's place.
Braille is a natural fit for children who don't speak
Braille is a code read with the fingers or the eyes, and it never asks anyone to say a word. In our free activities, children build each letter by tapping its dots and hear the letter spoken aloud. Each activity has a Show a hint button that shows the correct cell and which dots to use, so a parent who doesn't know braille can learn right alongside their child.
About the reading-recording feature
The Bright Sparkle Academy learning app includes one optional feature where children read aloud and the app checks their reading. Recordings are not kept. It is one option, not a requirement — children can answer activities by tapping instead, and nothing in the free website activities asks a child to speak or type.
What this is not
Bright Sparkle Academy is not a speech therapy tool, and it is not a communication device. It does not replace your child's speech-language pathologist, teachers, or IEP team. If your child uses signs, pictures, or a communication device, ask their team how an app like this can fit alongside what they already use.
Questions to ask before you pay
- Can my child answer without speaking or typing?
- Can I turn the voice off, or slow it down?
- Can my child try it free first?
- Does it collect my child's personal information?
- Can I cancel anytime?
Try it before you decide
The free demo activities in Bright Sparkle World need no account and no card, so you can see for yourself whether tapping is enough for your child. Every paid plan starts with a seven-day free trial.
